THE NOEMACHEILINAE FISHES FROM SICHUAN, WITH DESCRIPTION OF A NEW SPECIES I . Paracobitis, Nemacheilus AND Oreias (CYPRINIFORMES: COBITIDAE)

Abstract:
The paper dealt with a new species and a key to the five know species of loaches of the subfamily Nemacheilinae from Sichuan Province, China. The new species is diagnosed as follows. Paracobitis wujiangensis sp. nov. (Figs. 1 - 3 ) Holotype. No. 64274, total length 84 mm, body length 68 mm, collected from Wujang River;25 June, 1964 and in 1987. Paratype. 6 specimens, No. 64278, 64277, 84200, 87277-79, 64274, body length 42-72 mm, collected with the Holotype at the same time. The type specimens arc deposited in Sichuan Provincial Natural Resources Institute. D. iv, 8; A. iv, 5 ; P. i, 8-9; V. i, 5. Gill-rakers (inner) 6 -8. Vertebrae 4 +33-34+ 1 . Depth of body 5.6-6.8 in standard length, length of head 4.0-4.2, length of caudal peduncle 8.0-9.0, depth of caudal peduncle 6.1-8.0, length of snout 2.1-2.8 in head length, diameter of eye 5.2-5.6, Depth (not including the depth of soft fin folds) of caudal peduncle 1.8-2.1 in its length. Mouth inferior, the lower lip with a slight median incision, the upper jaw with a tooth-like structure. This new species is similar to Paracobitis potanini (Gunther), but differs from the latter in. the shorter soft fin fold between dorsal and caudal fins, a similar fold below the caudal peduncle, and in a lower caudal peduncle and a fleshy bud-like process on the base of the ventral fin.
