A PRELIMINARY OBSERVATION ON DISTRIBUTION,NUMBER AND POPULATION STRUCTURE OF RHINOPITHECUS BIETI IN BAIMA XUESHAN NATURAL RESERVE, YUNNAN, CHINA

Abstract:
This paper deals with the distribution, number and social structure of cach group of snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopil hecus bicti) distributing in the Baima xueshan Natural Reserve of Deqin County, Yunnan, in 1985. Only six troops have been discovered in this area. The number of individuals within these groups vary from 24 to 150, total amount about 487. They dwell in the coniferous forest at the elevation ranging from 3,200 to 4,167M. Their social structure is multi-male mating system with an age-gradcd-rnale troop. The age composition of the population is as following the adults, 28.79%, subadults, 30.3%, young, 22.72% and baby monkeys, 18.18%. The sexual ratio for adult is 1:3.2 (9 :29 ). There are solitary monkey out of the group. We observed that sometimes a group is divided into some subgroups at whiles they aggregated again into a large group.
