|
Abstract:
The Gaoyou Lake, location in the central part of Jiangsu Province, is the third largest one in this province. In the present paper the outhor puts forth a point of view on the origin of this lake for discussion. The Gaoyou Lake region was an ancient lagoon depression plain with a lot of small lakes before. After the Yellow River once incorperated the Huaihe River and flowed into the Yel-low Sea in A.D.1194, the experts of water conservancy in that time mostly adopted the strategy to maintain the water transport of grains to the imperial capital by coverting the water of Ye-llow River into the vast area of Huaihe River that led to the expansion of small lakes in the Gaoyou Lake region and formation of five "marshed lakes" and twelve lakes, and finally an uni-ted large lake in the late period of the Ming Dynastp (A. D. 1368-1644).
