History and Development of Researches on Bittacidae (Insecta: Mecoptera)

Abstract:
The progress in the study of Bittacidae fossils is reviewed in this paper. A list of fossils Bittacidae, with their distribution and geological ages, is provided. Up till now, 28 genera and 52 species have been reported from America, Australia, Europe and Asia, with most of them distributed in Germany, former USSR region and China. A proposal on the dispersion and migration of Bittacidae is put forward. Bittacidae began to evolve in Eurasia, and was spread to other continents in Tertiary. The present contradicting proposals and problems are far from being solved, and hence a further comprehensive research on Bittacidae should be taken into consideration in future.
