FREQUENT GEOMAGNETIC POLARITY REVERSALS AND TECTONISM
|
Abstract:
During the Phanerozoic, the geomagnetie field frequently reversed. Seven epochs may be distinguished, each corresponding to one period of orogenesis and magmatism. The author believes that the frequent reversals of the geomagnetic field might be closely related to the motion of the solar system in the Milky Way. The relationships of the reversals with the mass extinction, divergence or convergence of cantinents and orogensis are also discussed in this paper.
