A Study of the Urban Boundary Layer Model and Its Application in the Hong Kong Area
|
Abstract:
Due to the effect of complicated urban surface, the structure of the meteorological field in the urban boundary layer is different from other surface. An urban boundary layer energy balance model which resolution is 500 m is developed by averaging the surface characteristic parameter of every land use in certain grid according to this proportion. A urban boundary layer model system is carried out by using surface temperature calculated by the energy balance model as lower boundary conditions, and using mesoscale model MM5 as the initial condition and lateral boundary conditions. This model system is used to simulate the boundary layer structure in the Hong Kong area with complicated topography and coastline. The model results are in good agreement with the measurements. It is indicated that this modeling system has the capability to predict sea-land breeze, upstream blocking and streamline dividing around mountains and thermally induced circulations.
