"k Value" Method for Designing Ultrahigh-speed Traveling-wave Electroabsorption Modulator

Abstract:
A "k value" method for designing the ultrahigh-speed traveling-wave electroabsorption modulator(TW-EAM) is demonstrated. The phase velocity mismatch between the optical wave and the microwave, the impedance mismatch and the microwave loss of a TW-EAM are analyzed. As high as 140 GHz of 3 dB bandwidth of an optimized AlGaAs/GaAs TW-EAM is predicted.
