In this paper, the concept of an optical design expert system and themethodology of how to apply the expert system in sonie processes of opticaldesjgn discussed. The determination of the initial structure parameters of anoptical system and the removal obetacles in the optimization process have beenexplored in a preliminary fashion. Finally the research direction of computer-aidedoptical design, to build an intelligent optical CAD system by uniting an expertsystem with current CAD technology, has been pointed out.
