HEAT TREATING LASER MELTED/RAPIDLY SOLIDIFIED DUCTILE IRON FOR NOVEL TRIBOLOGICAL MATERIALS
|
Abstract:
Novel tribological iron-base materials containing both as-rapidly solidified eutectic cementite and fine graphite nodules were successfully fabricated by partial graphitization of cementite through heat treating laser melted/rapidly solidified ductile cast iron. The volume fraction of the rapidly solidified cementite and the fine graphite nodules, and hence the tribological properties of the novel materials fabricated can be easily controlled by controlling the progress of the cementite-graphite phase transformation through simply adjusting the anneal time. The materials which have the unique property combination of excellent wear resistance of the rapidly solidified eutectic cementite phase and outStanding self-lubrication, heat conduction and damping properties of the graphite phase are expected to have excellent peformance under dry and/or boundary lubrication tribological conditions.
