STUDY ON HIGH STRENGTH AND TOUGHNESS MICA-CONTAINING GLASS-CERAMICS WITH PREFERENTIALLY ORIENTED MICROSTRUCTURE
|
Abstract:
A new type of mica-containing glass-ceramics has been prepared by means of hot-press technique. A unique microstructure was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), i.e., lamellar fluorophlogovite-mica crystals distributed in glass with preferential orientation and their crystalline plane of (001) was pependicular to the direction of applied force of hot-pressing, confirmed by x-ray diffraction (XRD). The microstructure of the glass-ceramics leads to exceIlent mechanical properties, with flexural strength of approximately 300MPa and a corresponding fracture toughness of 2.8MPa. ml ", two to three times stronger than the conventional mica-containing glass-ceramics.
