STRUCTURE AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF ALUMINA FIBRES
|
Abstract:
The structure and mechanical properties of the alumina fibres have been studied. The structure was examined using a combination of X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. Raman andfluorescence spetroscopy were employed to investigate the behaviour of tensile deformation. The fibers havebeen found to have polycrystalline structure, high Young's modulus and fracture strength. The positions ofthe Raman bands from alumina and alrconia and of the fluorescence lines due to Cr ions doped in aluminalattice are all sensitive to the deformation of the fibres and there is a close linear shift in wavenumber with fiber strain (stress). The possible application of the phenomnon for investigation of the fiber rienforced composites is discussed.
