THE CHEMICAL REACTIONS OCCURRING DURING MELT MIXING OF PBT AND LDPE MODIFIED BY GRAFTING OF DIBUTYLMALEATE
|
Abstract:
Binary blends of poly(butylene terephthalate)(PBT) and low densitypolyethylene(LDPE)or functionalized LDPE copolymer with dibutylmaleate(LDPE-g-DBS)have been prepared by melt mixing.Morphological analysis of smoothedspecimen, solubility separation and infrared analysis of separated specimen, thermal analy-sis as well as dynamic mechanical determination have been performed on all the blends.Ithas been shown that during melt mixing the interchange reaction occurs and a(LDPE-g-DBS)-g-PBT graft copolymer is formed, which acts as an interfacial agent be-tween the polyethylene dispersed phase and the polyester matrix in blends, and that the in-terchange reaction is effected by degree of grafting of LDPE-g-DBS,mixing time andamount of catalyst.
