THE MICROSTRUCTURE OF MESOPHASE PITCH-BASED GRAPHITE FIBERS
|
Abstract:
The microstructure of a radial-type of mesophase pitch-based graphite fiberswas studied by transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The results indicatethat the mesophase pitch-based graphite fibers consist of graphite and turbostratic phase.Thecarbon layers in graphite phase are of more order in packing and preferred oriented align to thefibers axis in the longitudinal direction, but present a radial orientation in transverse cross sec-tion.The graphite crystallites show a sheet-like and forking structure and arrange staggeringlyalong to the fiber axis.In transverse cross section, however, the crystallites extend in radial di-rection with forking and netting from core to skin. The carbon layers in turbostratic phase are ofpoor order in packing and comparatively lower preferred oriented along the fiber axis.Theturbostratic phase inlays among the graphite phase. The severely lattice destortion was observedin some place.
