EFFECT OF LANTHANUM ON THE SURFACE STATE OF AMORPHOUS Ni_(63)Zr_(37) ALLOY

Abstract:
The composition depth profile and chemical characteristics of both the free anddull sides of amorphous Ni_(63)Zr_(37) and Ni_(63)Zr_(32)La_5 alloy ribbons were studied by means of Aug-er electron spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy combined with the use of argonbombardment.The oxide layer is thicker and the surface segregation of zirconium is more signif-icant on the dull side than the free side for Ni_(63)Zr_(37) alloy ribbon.Addition of a small amount oflanthanum can change the surface state of the two sides of amorphous Ni_(63)Zr_(37) alloy ribbonsignificantly.On the surface and sub-surface,active metallic nickel dispersed finely on the ox-ides of zirconium and lanthanum,and its electronic state is affected by the oxides.The oxidesof zirconium consist of ZrO_x(1
