This paper gives a comprehensive summary about important experimental and theoretical results, research trends and contentious problems of metallic hydrogen since 1988. The main progress of research work in the past five years has involved the discovery and the contests of H-A phase, the highpressure phase diagrams of hydrogen,structural transition at high pressure of solid hydrogen and the change of inner state of hydrogen molecule.
