APPLICATION OF A CENTURY MODEL TO MANAGEMENT EFFECTS IN THE PRODUCTIVITY OF FORESTS IN DINGHUSHAN
|
Abstract:
Century models are based on the soil texture and ecosystem functions in which the cycling of C and N are the key factors. A Century model was used to simulate and predict forest ecosystem functions, such as productivity, nutrient dynamics within the Dinghushan Biosphere Reserve. The results indicate that litter removal and shrub cutting affect biogeochemical cycling, reduce soil nutrients and lead to a decrease in long-term forest productivity. The model showed that as tnore biomass was removed, production continuously decreased. We conclude therefore, that it is necessary to stop or reduce biomass removal practices in order to maintain high productivity and improve sustainability in these forests.
