GROWTH OF THE TREES AND SAPLINGS IN THE LOWER SUBTROPICAL EVERGREEN BROAD LEAVED FOREST IN HEISHIDING,GUANGDONG PROVINCE
|
Abstract:
Growth in diameter and in height of the trees in the lower subtropical evergreen broad leaved forest in Heishiding,Guangdong Province,China, was studied using growth ring analysis and dendrometers.Annual diameter growth ranged about 0.1~0.5cm,differing among species and individuals.Diameter growth of some trees seemed to present a wavy rhythm of fast growing year(s)(1~3 years) and slow growing year(s)(1~3 years).Dendrometer measurement showed a mean annual diameter growth of 0.074cm(increment percentage 0.57%) in a 5 year period, with 17.6% of the individuals measured with dendrometers presenting zero or negative growth during this period.Annual height growth was measured about 10~50cm.Peak height growth occurred usually at 10~30 years. In the early stage of the tree growth, height growth prevailed over diameter growth, and the reverse was found later on.The diameter and height growth of the saplings(height 1~3m usually),measured with both vernier callipers and steel tape during a 5 year period, were 0.107cm and 4.76cm,respectively.No saplings showed zero or negative growth in diameter in the 5 year period, but about 9% of the individuals measured showed zero or negative growth in height.
