Several Questions about Translation of the Phonetic Terms in the Chart of IPA
|
Abstract:
The International Phonetic Alphabet developed by the International Phonetic Association has several versions, the latest being the version of 1996 updated on the version of 1993. The 1979 version is adopted in China. The translation of the recent chart of IPA reflects the understanding of the symbol system and their terms,as compared to some preceding Chinese versions of the IPA freely translated according to the property of the alphabets and others metaphrased according to the phonetic terms in the chart. Maybe no versions involve the matter of right or wrong. Given terminological consistency and technicality,we regard it proper to adopt the terms translated according to the same rule as they were denominated in the source IPA.
