A Comparison Between Chinese and Japanese Expressions of Politeness
|
Abstract:
This paper attempts to compare Chinese and Japanese expressions of politeness as manifested in (1) Greetings and farewells; (2) Gratitude and apologies; (3) Forms of address. It concludes that, despite their shared origin, Chinese and Japanese differ greatly in expressions of politeness. Failure to understand the differences will lead to pragmatic misuse in communication.
