The study of journalism as made by Xu Baohuang, Shao Piaoping and others around the May 4 {th} Movement Period all pointed toward a professional de velopm ent of the newspapers. As a result, organization and operation of newspapers bec ame their focus of attention. They proposed many influential views that take new s reporting as the sacred mission of the newspapers, the service of the communit y as their goals, the economic independence of the publishers as their basis, an d freedom of speech as their life environment. All these views were based on the practice of journalism in their time. They are also an embodiment of the functi oning of the new cultural ideas popular in the May 4~(th) Movement.
