A New Survey of the Song Dynasty Edition of Notes on Sunzi by Eleven Scholars

Throughout history, there have been over two hundred scholars making notes on nearly four hundred editions of Sunzi's Art of War in at least 27 languages. The Southern Song Dynasty edition of the book, Notes on Sunzi by Eleven Scholars, is generally acknowledged as the most popular edition among them. Inadequate attention, however, has been paid to the documentary study of the notes of the eleven scholars. This paper offers a systematic critical survey of the notes in terms of their redaction and stylistic values.
