On the Modernization of the Confucian Traditions
|
Abstract:
The discourse first reviews several core values in Confucianism (such as Humanity, Rightness, Ceremony, Wisdom and Trust) , and then explicates the complexity and richness of the Confucian traditions on the facets of time, area and level. But under the impingement of Western civilization, all the traditions of Confucianism are dissipated on the whole. Thus, this lecture points out that, on the one hand, animadversions on Confucianism made by the cultural elites of the May Fourth Movement are still superficial, and the enlightenments of Western values are also skin-deep; on the other hand, Confucianism must respond to the reign of the West, so as to get a lucky chance of renascence.
