Based on a careful examination of the type specimens of seven species and one variety in the Brachytheciaceae (including Brachythecium planiusculum, Eurhynchium coarctum, E. serricuspis, Rhynchostegium lept omitophyllum, R. longirameum, R. pallenticaule,
