ANDRA''''S FEASIBILITY STUDY ON DEEP GEOLOGICAL DISPOSAL OF HIGH-LEVEL LONG-LIVED RADIOACTIVE WASTE
|
Abstract:
This paper presents a summary of the feasibility report-Dossier 2005 on geological waste disposal, which was elaborated by the French National Radioactive Waste Management Agency(ANDRA). This Dossier covers results from fifteen years of multidisciplinary research on deep waste disposal, with special focus on the 130 m thick argillite formation located in Eastern France at a depth of 500 m. Results from experiments on argillite samples,in-situ underground experiments as well as numerical simulation on the long-term disposal evolution have shown the capacity of the investigated formation to host a radioactive waste disposal and to satisfy the specifications of long-term safety assessment. Main geological and geomechanical features of the argillite formation have been analyzed. Arrangement of waste disposal cells for different kinds of waste and the global disposal architecture are also presented.
