Expressing measurement uncertainty in Spark-OES analysis and calculating conformity probability to the material specifications

Abstract:
Every year,increasing number of the laboratories using OES(Optical Emission Spectroscopy) spectrometers gets accredited according to ISO 17025.The compliance with ISO 17025 has elevated the importance of estimating and reporting measurement uncertainty.The Guide to the expression of uncertainty in measurement(GUM) provides guidelines for conducting an uncertainty analysis.Unfortunately,the implementation of these guidelines can be a daunting task,especially if one is not familiar with the necessary mathematical and statistical concepts.Consequently,testing and calibration personnel must often find off-the-shelf tools that meet their analysis requirements.The paper presents the way that Thermo Fisher has implemented in its analytical software the calculation of the measurement uncertainty.It also describes an application based on the knowledge of the uncertainty in the goal to calculate the product conformance probability.
