In this paper, the newly developed high rate loading test control software for the INSTRON machine is introduced. Its functions and difficult key problems are analyzed thoroughly and deeply. With the determination of the dynamic fracture toughness of rock as an example,it is demonstrated that the developed INSTRON machine is a realistic tool for rock mechanics tests in the moderate strain rate range.
