Discovery of molecular water in fluid inclusions of olivine
|
Abstract:
Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometer, laser Raman spectrophotometer and laser Raman Microprobe have been used to detect composition of fluid inclusions in olivine phenocrysts in limburgite from Harkin area in eastern Inner Mongolia, China. The IR and laser Raman spectra show strong absorption bands of molecular water at 3245~3565cm -1 , and band of water vapor at 3627cm -1 . The spectrum of hydroxyl (OH) was not observed. Analysis of inert gases isotope compositions suggests that the water in the fluid inclusions is derived from mantle magma source instead of contaminated crust. The discovery reveals a new site for the mantle derived water.
