The results indicated that microwave remote sensing would be great prosperous for monitoring soil moisture, but its base must be researched. For the condition in China, the methods for monitoring soil moisture using NOAA-AVHRR digital image and meteorological station data to calculate thermal inertia, and evapotranspiration and crop water stress index, then estimate soil moisture were feasible.
