The paper describes the benefit of the standardization for electronic publicat ions and the facts of its development.The characteristics of ISO 8879 Standard General Makeup Language(SGML) which is a standard being used to describe the structure of the content model for electronic publlications are discussed.Finally,the current and the possible future developm ent of SGML in electronic publications is pointed out.
