Developments of Research on the Mental Mechanism in Children''''s Understanding of Irony

Abstract:
:Irony is a figure of speech in which the intended meaning is the opposite of that expressed by the words used. Children's difficulties in understanding irony are discussed here. 4 adult models of irony processing and relative findings in developmental researches are reviewed. Researches from the view of 2nd order Theory of Mind are also included. Current results are integrated in the frame of Allusional Pretense Theory and Second Order Theory of Mind. Suggestions for further research are provided.
