Development Prospects of Modernization of Traditional Chinese Medicine in the New Century

The editor's note: Reviewing the progress in the modernization of the traditional Chinese medicine (MTCM) and baed on the authors' Experience in MTCM, this paper makes a Summary about the ideas, methods, problems and prospects of MTCM and raises a thesis "The modernization of the industry of TCM is not equal to MTCM". The authors point out in the paper that to realize MTCM, high and new technologies should be introduced, multidisciplinary research be carried out, the study on the compositions of TCM and the relationshipbetween their chemical matters and their functions be enhanced and deeper investigation of the mechanisms of TCM be made to elucidate the pharmacological mechanisms of TCM Compositions and their substantial foundation and to innovate the theories of the pharmacological mechanisms of TCM so as to make the contents of TCM theories clearer, more scientific and systematic and richer of information. This is a new idea toward MTCM.
