Experimental Study of the Influence Factors on Small Caliber PELE Impacting Thin Target
|
Abstract:
In order to ascertain the pivotal factors affecting the lateral effect of PELE,a series of experiments of PELE projectiles impacting steel plate were made with different jacket materials, filling materials, impact velocities and impact angles. Each PELE was projected by a 12.7mm gun.The outcome of the experiments indicated the following four rules.Firstly, the lateral effect of PELE became notable when the ratio of the compressive resistance to extension strength of the jacket increased.Secondly, with the increase of the impact velocity, the amount of the debris increases and the lateral effect tones up after PELE perforated the target.Thirdly,it is not the density but the Poisson's ratio and Modulus of elasticity that mainly affect the lateral effect of PELE.And lastly, the lateral effect of PELE boosts up with the enlargement of the impact angle between 0 and 45 degrees. The above-mentioned rules may redound to the design and application of small caliber PELE.
