Environmental Effects of Organic Matter Enrichment in Sediment of Aquaculture Ponds
|
Abstract:
Aquaculture pond was characterized by enrichment of organic matter in sediment. Decomposition of organic matter would drive nutrient releases from the sediment. The main mechanisms were its own mineralization and onset of bottom anoxia that enhanced formation of harmful substances further. All the facts would exert adverse effects on the quantity and quality of aquatic products. Hence, targeting the sediment organic matter enriched, timely and accurate monitoring must be performed. Accordingly, the organic matter could be effectively treated by selective removal combined with oxidation in situ and ecological remediation. As a consequence, the ecological structures and functions of the pond could be modified to make the full use of the regenerable energy and natural feeds. Therefore sustainable developments of aquaculture production and aquatic environment could be achieved.
