Foraging habitat selection of the wintering Black-necked Cranes in Caohai, Guizhou, China

Abstract:
This paper reported results of field observation on foraging habitat selection of the wintering Blacknecked Cranes(Grus nigricollis ) in Caohai, Guizhou of China. Deta of the foraging habitat selection were analyzed by the Friedman statistical method. Five types of foraging habitats of Black-necked Cranes, i. e., sedgemeadow, shallow water marsh, corn field, vegetable field and grassland, were identified in Caohai. The sedgemeadow was the most preferable one of Black-necked Cranes While the farmland the least. The preferential sequence of the other habitats vdried site by site. Human activities in Caohai were one of the major factors influencing habitat use and selection by cranes.Some suggestions were also put forward on the habitat proectionfor the wintering Black-necked Cranes.
