Study on the Relationship between pH and Cell Proliferation of Microcystis aeruginosa
|
Abstract:
The relationship between pH and the cell proliferation of Microcystis aeruginosa was studied in the laboratory. Microcystis aeruginosa is one of the preponderant Cyanobacteria species causing fresh water harmful algal blooms in the lakes and the reservoirs. This study aims to analyze the accommodation ability of M. aeruginosa against the pH stress. The result showed that this algal species preferred alkali condition, and had the ability of changing the pH to a comfortable level. M. aeruginosa would grow better, as well as higher cell abundance would be obtained when the pH is between 7.4 and 9.7. Its ability of adjusting pH was better in a strong alkali environment than in a strong acid environment, and the final pH tended to between 7 and 9. In addition, the algal species did not die off in stronger alkali or stronger acid conditions during the experimental period. And there is still a possibility of water blooms.
