Damage Effects of SO2 and Its Epidemiology and Toxicology Research

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is one of the most important air pollutants all over the world, which makes city environment deteriorated and has severely threatened human health. Many studies of epidemiology show that SO2 can not only cause respiratory tract diseases,but also affect cardiovascular system and genital system; Toxicology evidences also indicate that SO2 may cause toxicological damage to multiple organs of animals, and some of them are even severer than damages in lungs. Therefore, SO2 is a systemic toxin. Oxidative stress, which was caused by a lot of free radicals produced during the period of the sulfite and bisulfite oxidation, may be the main toxicological mechanism of SO2.
