Selection of Shinisaurus crocodilurus on forest type in mountain streams in Luokeng Nature Reserve of Guangdong Province
|
Abstract:
From May to September,2006,an investigation was made on the forest type in mountain streams within the area under jurisdiction of Dazhuyuan protection station in the Luokeng Nature Reserve of Guangdong Province, where Shinisaurus crocodilurus inhabited, and the selection of S.crocodilurus on forest-type was studied with selection index method. The habitat characters of 154 S.crocodilurus individuals and the samples of 5 forest types(evergreen broadleaved forest, bamboo forest, mixed coniferous and broadleaved forest, coniferous forest, and shrub and grass)were surveyed, and the results showed that the selection of S.crocodilurus on forest type was not at random.S.crocodilurus preferred evergreen broadleaved forest, selected bamboo forest almost by chance, and kept away from other forest types. The selection on green broadleaved forest was probably due to the higher coverage of vegetation and the higher soil water-holding capacity and organic matter content. It was suggested that more attention should be paid on the protection of evergreen broadleaved forest to better protect S.crocodilurus.
