These lactobacilli were previously shown to secrete factors that inhibit tumor necrosis factor production from human monocytoid cells in vitro. Conditioned media from these lactobacilli were tested for the ability to modulate Helicobacter pylori-induced interleukin-8 (IL-8) production in AGS gastric epithelial cells. Out of 26 Lactobacillus spp. isolated from urease-negative patients thought not to harbor H. pylori, five significantly inhibited IL-8 production. The IL-8-inhibitory lactobacilli were identified as L. casei or L. paracasei, L. plantarum, L. rhamnosus, and L. salivarius and had no antagonistic effects on H. pylori growth. Our findings suggest potential candidates of Lactobacillus for further investigation of their beneficial effects on H. pylori-infected patients.
