Abstract:

Ramon Sabunde (1385-1435) is one of those authors, whose influence on evolution of philosophy was bigger than that of most of the philosophy manuals acknowledged. He fulfilled the role of intermediary between the middle ages and renaissance, and in his work Theologia naturalis seu liber creaturarum seu de homine he transmitted the most important ideas of his precursors. Those ideas were later evolved and spread by philosophers even better known to us than Sabunde himself. His main goal was to show readers the whole of our reality and moreover - the position and the meaning of human existence in the Universe. To achieve this goal he created the idea "the chain of existence", which is one of the main subjects in his Theologia naturalis. In Sabunde's opinion getting to know the world is the necessary entrance to contemplate the nature of man, which is the proper intent of philosophy. Sabunde shows us the uniqueness of a human kind by comparing man and other creatures - our similarities and dissimilarities; in general and also in detail. To understand all those similarities and dissimilarities is a task of every human being, otherwise they will not recognize his nature and value. And what is important - knowledge of ourselves may result in experiencing God. To experience and to get to know God, one must contemplate two unique characteristics of man, namely: intellect and free will. Those two are the roots of dignity and uniqueness of man. This way Ramon Sabunde's idea of Man, World and Universe, linked to ideas of the middle ages philosophy, re-bears as renaissance apotheosis of Man.
