Abstract: we aimed to determine the frequency of metabolic syndrome (ms), the distribution of its components, and lipidic abnormalities in 64 overweight and obese children aged 4 to 14 years old, treated at hospital de pediatria in posadas - misiones. a body mass index (bmi) between 85 and 94 percentiles was considered overweight, and a bmi equal to or higher than 95 percentile was considered obesity. ms frequency in obese children was 35.3 % and 0 % in overweight children. the order of frequency of ms components in obese children was: abdominal obesity 94.1 %, hypertriglyceridemia 47.1 %, low hdl cholesterol 37.3 %, hypertension 21.6 %, hyperglycemia 3.9 %. those in overweight children were: hypertriglyceridemia 46.2 %, abdominal obesity 38.5 %, low hdl cholesterol 30.8 %, hypertension 15.4 % and fasting hyperglycemia 0 %. the most common lipidic abnormalities were hypertriglyceridemia, high ratios of triglyceride/hdl cholesterol and low hdl cholesterol. these findings suggest the importance of promoting healthy lifestyles to reduce the frequency of chilhood obesity and prevent ms and dyslipidemia.
