Abstract:

there is a general consensus that states that emotional innovation is the ability of individuals to cope with emotions (salovery and mayer, 1990; law, wong and song, 2004; mayer, caruso and salovey, 2000; wong, law and wong, 2004a; wong and law, 2007), which is as important or more important than the intellectual coefficient in a world of business and in a professional carrer (erkus, 2008; goleman, 1995) not much has been studied about emotional intelligence, and most of the sutides has been done in u.s.a., europe and asia. this article reports on the results of a research study done about emotional intelligence of leaders who are at a high management level or supervision in the colombian financial sector. to reach this goal, a tool developed by wong and law, 2002, was used, having a total sample of 218 participants. this instrument has been proved and validated, and as a result, it has been concluded that it can be used in management, leadership and organizational behaviour areas (aslan and erkus, 2008) the results show that leadres of the colombian financial sector know how to use their emotions; it means they konow how to conduct them to constructive activities and personal performance. with a big advantage, leaders in the financial sector value and understand their own emotions, showing them in a natural way. as an opportunity to improve, there are leaders of the colombian financial sector that experience a difficult period of time recovering from emotional tides and anxiety, also being difficult for them to perceive and understandthe emotions of people sorrounding them.
