the process of building a nation-state in chile during the xix century was a protracted one. from various points of view - political, social and economic, among others - it is possible to argue that throughout the period from 1829 - 1880 it was subject to manifold tensions which not only resulted in delays, but that also demanded broad socio-political agreements which started to yield fruit once the contradictions giving rise to the civil wars of the 1850s were overcome. it was only then that the process of political and territorial organization took on greater velocity, although not free of serious problems, and and gave way to the modernization process in the country.
