Abstract:

the war of the peruvian-bolivian confederation has been classified by traditional historiography as an epic event and a symbolic milestone in the process of consolidating the nation state. in this account the influence of the so-called “proscribed peruvians” who settled in chile has conventionally been relegated to the background. nonetheless, this article aims to highlight the discursive constructions of peruvian emigrees in the chilean press thereby revealing the ideological sources of such discourse and its impact in chile. indeed, there developed a common language between different immigrant factions and the chilean government. such language may be defined, it is argued, as essentially republican and served to conciliate both the political and economic interests of all social actors. in methodological terms, it is assumed that text is but political action in order for such action it to be correctly assessed it is necessary to reconstruct the intellectual, social and political environment in which it was articulated.
