Abstract: felipe herrera lane (1922 - 1996), chilean lawyer, economist and politician devoted his life time to fulfill his grand project: economic development and integration of latin america. in order to achieve his goals he held several outstanding positions in chile and abroad: professor at universidad de chile, ceo of chile central bank, director of imf, founder and president of the inter-american development bank, president of the international fund for the promotion of culture (unesco), among others. felipe herrera published several books, delivered several speeches at international conferences ranging from history through economics and international affaires. the article depicts the essential characteristics of herrera's goal on the subject of unification of latin america. key aspects of his views on: the role of chile in latin america, the definition of economic policies that would end poverty, how to overcome the local nationalisms, the significance of education and culture in the integration process, are considered. herrera's ideas would allow to transform latin america to a "community of towns with effective influence in history" and to overcome what german arciniegas defined as "the separated states of america".
