Abstract:

in order to establish the response of canola to a low population density, three varieties and one hybrid in single and double rows were evaluated in 2001; four hybrids and four varieties in rows at 80 cm in 2003; and a population going through a selection process was included in 2005. the variables included: plant height, stem diameter, number of braches and pods per plant, number of seeds and length per pod, seed weight per plant, specific weight and dry biomass weight. in 2001, the 'hyola 401' hybrid obtained the greatest grain weight per plot (542 g) with support from the pod length (r = 0.48**). in 2003, the yield was different between the hybrids and the varieties with respect to the weight of seeds per plant (anova; p = 0.05). a regression analysis (stepwise) showed that the number of pods per plant and the length of the pods were consistent in the yield [2001, y = -22.2 + 0.04ns + 3.4ls + 0.04rg (r2 = 43%); 2003, y = -15.4 + 0.05ns + 2.62ls + 0.10pbs (r2 = 72%)]. in 2005, the number of pods was markedly above the yield, in this case with support from the number of branches per plant [y = 23.2 + 0.02ns (r2 = 28.4%); y = 24.4 + 1.5nr (r2 = 15.6%)].
