this article analyzes the relationship between faith and reason in clement of alexandria, who, although he did not develop a systematic theory on the matter, sensed the great balance principle: god himself is the author of nature and grace. thus he achieves an effective synthesis of both: he does not allow the modest contribution of reason to be underestimated or ignored, but does not exalt revealed doctrine to the point of declaring it the only sovereign certainty on the road that man must take towards his own eternal salvation. this article is complemented by a study of historical-cultural and biographical background information to properly understand the context of clement's thought.
