this paper aims to discuss the role of commuting at intrametropolitan level and its relation to urban agglomeration restructuring processes. a theoretical and empirical review is presented to build a preliminary framework, used in the analysis of the demographic census 2000 data, to identify the spatial patterns of major urban areas of brazil.
