the objective of this article is to re-examine the rural protests and strikes in the sugar industry in pernambuco, brazil, between the years 1964 and 1968, and to raise certain issues regarding the process of reorganizing the rural trade union movement after the installation of the military dictatorship in brazil in 1964.
