Narrativas multimídia de aprendizagem de língua inglesaDOI: 10.4067/S0718-09342010000300011 Keywords: narrative, multimodality, conceptual blending, metaphor. Abstract: this study of multimedia narratives for english language learning focuses on visual representations and is theoretically supported by visual semiotics (kress & van leeuwen, 2006), the multimodal communication theory (kress & van leeuwen, 2001), the appraisal theory (martin & white, 2005) and the theory of conceptual blending (fauconnier & turner, 2002). the corpus, from which excerpts and images were selected, comprises 20 narratives written by literature undergraduate students at ufmg in 2005. this study demonstrates that (1) visual narratives convey ideational, interpersonal and textual metafunctions; (2) visual narratives metaphorize visual experiences; (3) images and sounds work as input for conceptual blendings. this study reveals that visual narratives are not mere illustrations of the written text and that the association of image and text presents important aspects of human cognition.
