Abstract:

a 48 kda outer membrane protein (omp48) of aeromonas veronii exhibiting affinity for mucosal secretions (mucin, lactoferrin, immunoglobulins, or collagen), induced a statistically-significant immune response when given intragastrically to white new zealand rabbits. further studies showed a positive correlation between immunoglobulins and antibody-producing cells (apc). intragastric administration of the antigen induces vigorous local and systemic responses, mostly iga and igg against a. veronii omp48. responses were evident by the presence of (i) apc to omp48 in the gastrointestinal tract, spleen and blood; and (ii) high levels of circulating antibodies. stimulation of the mucosal immune system by immunogenic bacterial antigens can be a major alternative for the control and prevention of aeromonas-associated diseases.
